Ashley Lunkenheimer Voted New Chair of Delaware County Board of Elections

The Delaware County Board of Elections voted to appoint Ashley Lunkenheimer the new Chair. The reorganization followed the appointment of Scott Alberts to fill the vacancy on the panel created by the retirement of Gerald Lawrence, a Board member since 2004 and its Chair since 2020.

“Being elected Chair of this Board is an extreme honor,” said Ashley Lunkenheimer. “Together, we will continue the work of protecting the integrity of our elections, improving voter services, and preserving the public’s trust in this cornerstone of our democracy.”

Ms. Lunkenheimer began serving on the Delaware County Board of Elections in 2020. Ms. Lunkenheimer is a lawyer with experience as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, and later, working with a top international law firm, and previously serving as in-house counsel for a multi-billion dollar healthcare company. In addition, she has built contacts across government, corporate and community leaders in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Ms. Lunkenheimer earned a bachelor's at Amherst College, a master's in social work at Columbia University and her law degree at University of Pennsylvania, where she also graduated in the top 5 percent of her class and was a member of the prestigious Law Review. Ms. Lunkenheimer served as the first captain of the US Women's Developmental National Rugby Team. Ashley and her wife, Starla, live in Media, where they are raising their three children.

Mr. Alberts was appointed this month in a unanimous vote by County Council to serve in the post vacated by Mr. Lawrence. Mr. Alberts’ experience in elections includes past service as the elected Treasurer of Upper Darby Township, several terms as an elected official on his precinct election board as Judge and Inspector, in addition to service with various candidate and Democratic Party committees. Mr. Alberts brings to the Board a wealth of knowledge on matters related to ballot-access petitions, petition objections, and campaign-finance regulations at the local, state and federal levels. Mr. Alberts earned a bachelor’s degree in history at Hartwick College. He has two decades' experience in business operations in higher education, the music industry, and currently, as Director of Administrative Services for Upper Darby Township.

Mr. Lawrence, a member of the Board since 2004 and Chair since early 2020, was highly respected by officials from both political parties, having served most years as the minority-party member.

“On behalf of Council, I want to express our confidence in Ashley Lunkenheimer and fellow Board members John McBlain and Scott Alberts, who we trust to follow in Jerry Lawrence’s footsteps, providing bipartisan leadership to conduct fair and free elections for the voters of Delaware County,” said Delaware County Councilwoman Christine Reuther.
