A Letter from Ernie Derrickson, Race Director:
To the runners of the Media 5 Mile Race, Volunteers, Sponsors, the Media area community, and all who have supported our event.
For many months, we have been planning and working diligently to have a safe and successful race on Sunday, September 12, 2021. Unfortunately, Delaware County is currently in the (CDC) Center for Disease Control’s “HIGH” category, for level of community transmission of COVID-19. This designation indicates the increase in cases, hospitalizations, and COVID patients admitted to the Intensive Care Units. After considerable discussion, the Board of Directors has decided to change the race format to a VIRTUAL race.
Making the change to a virtual race is the only responsible decision we could make to keep the runners, volunteers, spectators, and the community safe from the transmission of the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19. We cannot justify the risk of exposure that our historically crowded course, with large numbers of people in close contact with each other, could present. Holding this race virtually will allow us to continue our mission to provide financial support for Media nonprofits and community organizations. This would be impossible without the generous financial support of our sponsors and runners. Over the next few days, we will be sending our runners details of the virtual race.
In closing, the members of the Board wish to thank everyone for their support and participation for more than forty years! We wish everyone the best as we work through this pandemic, as the community that we are. Hopefully, we will see you all on Friday, June 17, 2022, our traditional third Friday night in June event. Thank you all for your understanding and consideration, be safe and well, and we will see you in 2022!
Ernie Derrickson,
Media 5 Mile Race Board President
