Philadelphia Union announced on April 8 that defender Nathan Harriel has signed a new contract with the club, keeping him under contract through the 2028–29 season with an option for the 2029–30 campaign.
The signing highlights Harriel’s importance to Philadelphia Union’s defense and ongoing efforts to maintain a strong roster of professional players. The team is focused on representing the city in elite competition while fostering community ties and youth programs, according to the official website.
“Nate has established himself as an essential part of our defense over the past five years,” said Jon Scheer, Interim Sporting Director of Philadelphia Union. “His versatility, competitiveness and dedication have been vital to the team’s success, and his emergence as a leader both on and off the field has been significant. We look forward to his continued impact and important role in the coming years.”
Harriel joined Philadelphia Union as a homegrown player before the 2021 season. During his time with the club, he contributed to recording Major League Soccer’s best mark with 59 shutouts between 2021 and 2026, while conceding only the second fewest goals during that period. He also scored six goals and provided six assists over five seasons. After six matches in 2026, Harriel leads Major League Soccer with 17 interceptions and ranks fourth in aerial duels won (33). In addition to his defensive work, he captained Philadelphia Union twice this season against Club América in Concacaf Champions Cup play.
In international play, Harriel received his first call-up for the United States Men’s National Team in 2025 where he appeared in three friendlies against Turkey, Switzerland, and Japan. He was also included on Team USA’s Olympic roster for four matches during their run at those Games.
